Temperaments

For over two millennia, many great philosophers, physicians, psychologists, and scholars have provided extensive evidence and arguments for the ‘nature vs. nurture’ debate, which asks the crucial question: are we all born with specific personality traits, or are they developed through our upbringing and life experiences?

The four temperaments theory, rooted in over 2,400 years of history, is one of the earliest and most enduring personality frameworks in both psychology and medicine. It concludes that each of us is born with unique biological traits (nature), which are then shaped and refined through our experiences, such as family, culture, and education (nurture). This combination of inherent and learned factors ultimately shapes how we act, feel, and perceive the world around us.

The Arabic word for temperament, mizaj, refers to an individual’s inherent nature—the unique biological makeup we are born with. This intrinsic framework plays a significant role in shaping our behaviours, reactions, and communication styles throughout our lives, often influencing us both consciously and unconsciously.

The knowledge of temperaments provides the essential starting point for personal growth. Without this foundation, it is difficult to recognise our strengths, identify areas for improvement, or tap into our full potential.

Whether you’re aiming to be a more assertive leader, a more empathetic parent, a focused student, or simply working toward a personal goal, understanding your temperament can offer the clarity and direction you need to succeed.
